Why battery parks cause noise nuisance

A BESS installation consists of one or more containers with lithium-ion batteries, inverters (PCS units) and active cooling systems. The cooling fans and transformers produce a continuous low-frequency sound (50 to 200 Hz) that carries for hundreds of metres. In rural areas, where background noise is low, this is extra noticeable, often at night as well.

Legal framework in Belgium

BESS installations fall under VLAREM II legislation. Strict limits apply at the property line of residential zones, especially at night (40 dB(A) or lower). An acoustic study before applying for a permit is strongly recommended. We work with certified acoustic consultancies to support this.

Our approach

We carry out an acoustic analysis based on the type of installation and the planned location. We then design an enclosing or perimeter solution with absorbing panels (often rockwool-based) and a steel support structure. The barriers are modular, fire-resistant and removable for maintenance access to the containers.

Result

Reduction of 12 to 20 dB at the property line, in line with VLAREM standards, without obstructing access or ventilation. The solution is delivered with a measurement report to support your permit.
