About Kokowall

Kokowall is a modular, plantable sound barrier with an exterior of natural coconut fibre wrapped around recycled ABS tubes. The panels are built as a sandwich construction: two rows of sound-absorbing coconut tubes with a sound-insulating core in between. This allows Kokowall to combine high absorption (DLα up to 12 dB, cat. A4) with an insulation value of Rw 30 dB, placing it in the highest insulation class B3 according to EN 1793. Thanks to its light weight of approximately 25 kg/m², a narrow foundation is sufficient, and the barrier can be installed quickly, even in locations where concrete barriers or earth berms are not feasible. The natural coconut fibre also provides an ideal surface for climbing plants, allowing the barrier to become fully green within a few years. Kokowall is produced in accordance with CE standard EN 14388 and is treated with FR Firestop C26 for fire retardancy.

What sets this barrier apart from standard acoustic walls in practice.

Quickly and fully plantable

The aerial roots of climbing plants such as Hedera helix 'Hibernica' or Virginia creeper adhere perfectly to the natural coconut fibre. With 3 plants per linear metre and special plant clips, the barrier is visually green from the start and completely covered within a few years. The vegetation also extends the lifespan of the coconut cladding.

Anti-graffiti due to natural surface

Unlike smooth concrete barriers, the diffuse, rough coconut surface does not invite graffiti. Paint adheres poorly to the highly absorbent fibres. If graffiti does occur, it is easily concealed by the growing plants. No recurring cleaning costs.

Lightweight and fast construction time

At approximately 25 kg/m², Kokowall is significantly lighter than concrete. The foundation is narrow, and the prefabricated panels are slid between HEA/IPE steel columns. The result is a short construction time, minimal site impact, and installation is possible where heavier systems are not.

Sandwich construction for dual function

A sound-insulating board is enclosed between two rows of sound-absorbing coconut tubes. This construction provides both high absorption (no reflection to the other side) and solid insulation (Rw 30 dB, class B3). For extreme noise reduction, a heavier insulating board can be used.

Decorative and custom-made

Panels are manufactured with half-centimetre precision, in any desired height from 0.5 to 10 m. Sloped finishes, passageways, transparent combinations, or integration with artworks are all possible. The barrier blends seamlessly with its natural surroundings.

Fire-safe and certified

The ABS tubes are V0 grade (NEN 6065 flame spread class 2) and the coconut cladding is treated with FR Firestop C26. Production is in accordance with CE standard EN 14388 and designed according to the Dutch Guideline for Noise Barriers along Roads (GCW 2012).

Frame finish

Custom frames and posts

Beyond the standard galvanised steel, the panel frames and steel posts can optionally be finished in Corten steel or in anthracite RAL 7016. This lets the Kokowall screen blend seamlessly into the architecture or garden design.

Fast-growing, evergreen classic. Attaches itself perfectly between the coconut fibres using aerial roots. Tolerates any soil type that is not too wet.
