Noise control for transformers & high-voltage cabins

Transformers produce a recognisable low-frequency hum caused by magnetostriction in the transformer core. This 100 Hz tone (and harmonics) penetrates walls and travels far, especially at night. For grid operators, hospitals, data centres and industry, we design custom acoustic enclosures that effectively reduce this hum.

Why transformer noise is so bothersome

The dominant 100 Hz tone (and 200/300 Hz harmonics) is perceived as irritating by the human ear because it is continuous and not blocked by walls or windows. Conventional sound insulation often falls short because it is designed for higher frequencies. A specific approach is required.

    Applications

We work on distribution transformers in residential areas, high-voltage cabins on industrial estates, transformers in data centres and hospitals, and industrial power transformers. Every project starts with on-site measurements to map the frequency profile precisely.

    Our solution

A custom enclosure around the transformer or cabin, built from heavy massive panels for insulation, combined with absorbing layers on the inside to avoid resonance. Special silencers in the ventilation openings let air through but block sound. Access doors are acoustically sealed.

    Considerations

A transformer needs to cool. We always size the enclosure in consultation with the electrical installer to prevent overheating. Access for inspection and maintenance remains fully guaranteed via sound-tight doors.

    Recommended materials

    Steel enclosure

High mass for insulation of low-frequency sound.

    Rockwool inner lining

Prevents internal resonance and boosts absorption.
