Sound wall vs acoustic barrier: what is the difference?
The terms "sound wall" and "acoustic barrier" (or "geluidsscherm" in Dutch) are used interchangeably and effectively mean the same thing: a vertical barrier that blocks noise. "Sound wall" is used slightly more often for industrial constructions from 3 m upwards, along motorways or around industrial estates. "Acoustic barrier" is heard more often for gardens and residential settings up to 2.5 m. Noise Solutions uses the same materials and technology for both. See our acoustic barrier overview for the full comparison.
Types of sound wall
A sound wall is made of one or more panels between vertical posts. The panel type drives the noise reduction (insulation, in dB) and absorption. Noise Solutions offers four main types.
- Coconut sound wall (Kokowall): natural fibre, very high absorption, plantable
- Steel sound wall (Noise-Reducer): prefab, lightweight, ideal for industry and padel
- Wooden sound wall: warm finish, perfect for gardens and residential areas
- Transparent sound wall: preserves light and view, ideal along terraces
Which height does your sound wall need?
A sound wall works best when it is high enough to break the direct line between source and receiver. For a garden, 1.8 m to 2.5 m is usually enough. For a padel club, we advise 4 m to 6 m. For industrial sites or motorways, up to 8 m. The closer to the source, the lower the wall can be for the same effect.
